The Alberta Ballet’s, ALL OF US weaves 20 classic Tragically Hip songs into a story of a post-apocalyptic Earth, where two competing clans are left fighting to shape a new world.
Our campaign was inspired by Dada artists who expressed their discontent with violence, war and nationalism in the 1920’s. We adopted their style of collage and abstract art to bring the gracefulness of ballet and the chaos of war to print. It was a pleasure for Mike Meadus and I to work with the Ballet’s Artistic Director, Jean Grand-Maître and portray his vision.
Thanks to Sevgi Demer and Photographer, Paul McGrath who rounded out a great creative team.
Anyone living in Calgary knows and loves Crave Cupcakes owned by the sister team, Carolyne and Jodi. They learned from their Mom, aunts and grandmothers how to bake using wholesome ingredients and only the best baking practices. Their passion for creating beautiful and delicious baked goods is contagious and inspired the creative team to build a wonderful bakery experience.
It was a treat collaborating with Designer, Marc Rimmer, Interior Designer, Sarah Ward and Strategist, Janay Ferguson. We paid homage to Mom's and Grandma's kitchen with tiled floors and patterns reminiscent of an old quilt.
Here's a few samples of the new brand, but there's lots more coming.
The King Edward Hotel was built in the early 1900’s as a working class hotel mainly serving railroad workers. During prohibition in the 1920s, the hotel was busted on more than one occasion for serving alcohol, and later made history as Calgary’s first establishment to serve black and white patrons in the same room.
By the 1940s, the King Eddy bar became a working-class hangout known for its cheap beer. In the 1970s and 1980s, The Eddy became a blues bar and eventually closed its doors in 2004.
The King Eddy reopened in 2016 as part of the new National Music Centre. The iconic neon sign was refurbished and inspired the new logo. To pay homage to its liveliest era, we created a series of original blues posters and one large wall mural. Museum archives and old newspaper clippings were used for accuracy of musicians, dates and cover charges. The posters were arranged and mounted onto salvaged clap board and now hang inside the remodeled blues bar.
Geoff Hanson collaborated with me on this project. His amazing design skills, love of music and ability to swing a hammer made him the perfect duet partner.
It's a privilege when one of the world's top chefs, Michael Noble asks you to help create a wonderful brand experience for his new restaurant and bar. It was so much fun designing everything from the neon sign to bar coasters. The 100 year old National Hotel and its checkered past, provided lots of inspiration and juicy content.
Geoffrey Hanson hand painted the meat board out front, Crystal Oicle was my webmaster, Photographer, John Gaucher captured the true essence of The NASH, The Glenbow Museum provided lots of great historical photos and Sarah Ward did an amazing job on the interior.
"Open on a beach" was always the first line in every script presented to our clients at WestJet. Eventually a suitable project came up and we got to go to Disneyland. I worked with WestJet from 2007 to 2008 while employed as Creative Director at TAXI Calgary. I worked with Trent Burton, my Co CD, on everything from TV campaigns to their annual report. It was a great experience being part of the team that developed the "Owners Care" campaign.
I worked with the Stampede for five years while employed at Highwood Communications. There was never a shortage of things to advertise and promote when you're working with The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. We produced everything from TV commercials to the annual Stampede Poster.
Here's a few of my favourite pieces. Asking your friends to model in a bathroom stall and having a heated debate about the true consistency of grass in cow poo, is when you know you don't have a normal job.
I worked with lots of talented people including Steve Williams, Rob Sweetman, Dan King and Shayne McBride.
Grow Calgary is Canada’s largest urban agricultural farm. They grow fresh produce for the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank to ensure all Calgarians have access to healthy, local food. I was happy to help them out with a new logo and few collateral pieces.
TOQUE is an all Canadian restaurant located in the Rocky Mountains. We created a logo and series of icons that reflect the true spirit of Canadians and our rugged outdoors.
I've worked with Steve Williams since my first job as a graphic artist decades ago. I've always described Steve as "writer's writer". He's very talented and is following his passion for writing novels. I'm flattered that he asked me to help out with his book covers.
It was great working with photographer, Jason Stang on these covers. Although, neither Jason or myself knew how to roll a joint and an expert was brought in. No joke.
The Calgary Farmers' Market didn't always have the biggest budget but they had a huge appetite for fun creative. Most often we used stock photography or did illustrations ourselves but still provided effective campaigns for our client.
I worked with writers, Trent Burton and Nick Asik. Nick's LOSER headline is still one of my all time favourites. Jason Stang photographed the rooster. Thankfully he had a pet rooster and we were able to save money on talent.
An awareness campaign and website we did last year with L & K Real Estate Group. We did several small space ads creating a fun rivalry between inner city neighbourhoods. Mel Mckay did the writing and my lovely neighbour, Carol modeled for the poster. She really is lovely and a good actor.

Growing up in Medicine Hat, home to many clay based factories, it’s only natural that I've been playing with clay since I was a child. Influenced by my design background, my pieces have a minimal aesthetic and refined colour palette. Through the process of slip casting high fire porcelain, my vessels are simple in form, highly tactile and always food safe.
